The DOOT Protocol

The DOOT Protocol lays out the steps and guidelines for a systematic practice where educational developers conduct observation of online teaching upon request of an online educator. These observations are confidential with the purpose of facilitating professional growth of the requesting educator.

The Protocol considers observation of teaching activities during the time that learners engage with the course. It does not include considerations for the design and development of its content, which usually happen prior to the start of a course.

Observation process entails three steps as provided here that are facilitated by educational developers who are expected to be familiar with the CoI theory of online education, and ideally, with experience in online teaching or supporting online educators. Online educators should initiate the process by requesting an observation.

Pre-Observation

This guide, written for educational developers, addresses requirements to set the stage for an effective developmental observation. Important steps of building rapport with the educator who is being observed and selecting a focus area for observation is included in this guide.
